Rio Tinto's Debt Gamble, BHP Builds

Arch Coal has completed the acquisition of Rio Tinto's Jacobs Ranch coal mine for $764 million. For Rio Tinto, under tremendous pressure to reduce its $42-billion debt, the selling spree has just got underway. Meanwhile, rival BHP Billiton is sitting pretty with $18 billion in cash, and is eyeing 5 acquisitions. So is Western Coal.

Coking coal price cuts

The metallurgical coal industry is set to face significant declines in price, according to analyst’s forecasts. Bloomberg conducted a survey of a nine-analyst panel whose median forecast placed the price of coking coal at $200 a tonne by April 2009. The individual forecasts ranged from $140 to $305 a tonne.
